Compost Facility in Sunol
On March 29, 2006, a group of citizens in Sunol gathered in the Sunol Glen School cafeteria to discuss the Alameda County Waste Management proposed grant of $5,000,000 to place a green waste and food waste facility in the Sunol Valley to be run by Material Recovery, Inc. (MRI). According to the reports given by MRI, the compost facility will eventually allow up to 600 tons a day, one-third being food waste -- that works out to be 1.8 millions tons of waste a year flowing to this small valley.
The concerns of the people of Sunol are:
- air quality of the Sunol Valley, Ruby Hills, Little Valley, and Callipe Preserve
- the placement of the facility in a flood plain
- the water quality of downstream communities of Fremont and Union City
- food waste piles in open for up to 90 days before processing
- the attraction of vermin such as rats and raccoons
- the close proximity of residences to the facility
- the overall diminishing quality of life for Sunol residents
According to the community of residents that live in the area of the proposed site, called CHACE, the three-inch thick EIR is full of inaccuracies. Waste Management gave a short turn around time for people to read this very large report.
UPDATE
Concerned citizens attended meetings at the Sunol Gof Course on April 26th and at the San Leandro Waste Management office on May 4.
As a result, on 6/30/06, Waste Management has tabled the compost idea for Sunol and will look for other sites.
Good work, all!
