"Man is whole when he is in tune with winds, the stars, and the hills as well as with his neighbors.
Being in tune with the community is part of the secret.
Being in tune with the universe is the entire secret.
Man's greatest mission is to preserve life, not to destroy it."

News:
- Ned MacKay: East Bay Regional Park District Land Acquisition -- AS REPORTED RECENTLY in the Contra Costa Times, the East Bay Regional Park District board of
directors has just approved a land acquisition that, when completed in three
years, will be one of the largest such transactions in the district's history.
The purchase will add the 1,476-acre Tyler Ranch to Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park. The park occupies much of Pleasanton and Sunol Ridges -- those long, wooded ridges running north and south on the west side of Interstate 680 across from Pleasanton.
The acquisition is possible through the support of the Priem Family Foundation, a tax-exempt organization dedicated to preserving open space in the greater Bay Area. more>>

Threats:
- Uncontrolled suburban, rural, and leapfrog development caused
by...
- uncoordinated and irrational planning
- irresponsible, permissive zoning, zone changes, and variances
- counties in competition with cities
- sacrificing agricultural land to maximize tax revenue
- Increased taxes, rates, and fees to subsidize costly, disruptive
extensions of water and sewer service for new development
- Irreversible damage to environmental resources, potential parkland,
wildlife habitat, and oak woodlands
- Uncontrolled development leading to erosion of stream banks
|
Goals:
- Study alternatives to the Oak Hills proposal,
such as a Eastern Pleasanton Ridgelands park.
- Establish a continuous Ridgelands Preserve in Alameda, Contra
Costa, and Santa Clara counties
- Link state and regional parks with hiking and equestrian trails
- Stimulate urban revitalization, efficient use of resources and
of existing infrastructure
Support Alameda County's Measure D ("Urban Growth Boundary")
passed in November, 2000.
